Needham Suspends Tobacco Sales at Three Stores Over ID Violations

Needham suspends tobacco sales at three stores after all fail first ID check under new age law. The Board of Health voted unanimously, 5-0, to impose weeklong suspensions on Speedway, 7-Eleven and the Needham Service Center following a January 9 compliance sweep testing the town's nicotine-free generation policy, which bars sales to anyone born on or after January 1, 2004. Speedway alone was hit with a $100 fine; the board waived it for 7-Eleven and the Needham Service Center.
Speedway's point-of-sale system failed to block the sale despite a scanned ID, a rep said, calling the corrective software "a false sense of confidence" fix. Separately, the board announced Needham has become the fourth Massachusetts local health department to earn state accreditation, following Boston, Cambridge and Worcester.
