Health board starts budget push on rats, senior meals
Board of Health · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Needham Board of Health begins FY27 budget push on rats and senior meals. Staff told the board the Select Board requested added pest-control funding after resident rat complaints, with "smart traps" at the town's recycling facility recording no catches in recent months despite continued sightings. The bigger ask: a contract with the Needham Public Schools Nutrition Department to expand senior meal service, building on a program that already delivered 10,335 two-meal packets last year, with the schools absorbing roughly $82,000 annually in unreimbursed costs.
Separately, an August case forced condemnation of a Central Avenue apartment lacking smoke detectors and safe egress, and a Rosemary Lake cyanobacteria advisory remains in effect pending a state retest. Board member Ed called the region's shared health-services program "a model for other regional boards." Members voted 3-0 twice, approving June minutes and adjournment, and tentatively set an October 23 meeting to debate a marijuana-dispensary ballot question.
