Conservation Panel Clears $20M Housing Rehab Plan
Conservation · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Needham conservation panel approves $20 million Seabeds Way housing plan, saves historic oak. The Needham Conservation Commission voted unanimously to issue an order of conditions for the Needham Housing Authority's $20 million rehab of the Seabeds Way affordable housing complex, clearing the way for new utility poles bringing all-electric power to the 46-unit, four-building project. Architect Ben Wilson of BH+A said arborist Christopher Orchard recommended pruning, not removing, a nearly 200-year-old red oak near the pole route; the commission required arborist supervision and three years of monitoring reports.
Commissioner Pauline recused herself, warning "there is a potential likelihood" Eversource could still demand the tree's removal. The panel also closed hearings on a Chabad Center expansion at 1195 Central Avenue, 193 Evelyn Road and 176 Whitman Road, and continued reviews of a teardown at 75 High Rock Street and a new pool at 59 Pershing Road to October 8.
