Needham Conservation Commission unanimously backs Pollard Middle School geothermal wells under Article 97, clearing a required local hurdle. The commission voted 5-0 at its July 23 meeting to determine that approximately 61,000 square feet of Warner Field at DeFazio Park is surplus to conservation and open space needs and to support its use for between 100 and 120 subsurface geothermal wells serving the new Pollard Middle School — contingent on full restoration of the baseball diamond after construction ends. Town manager representative Katie and Superintendent Dan Gutekance said the Massachusetts School Building Authority had flagged the Article 97 question during schematic design review, and that informal guidance from the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs indicated the wells should be assumed to trigger the law, requiring unanimous approvals locally and a home rule petition through the legislature.

The Parks and Recreation Commission was scheduled to vote the next morning. The commission also closed hearings and issued orders of conditions for the Walker School addition at 968 Central Avenue — where consultant Brandon Lee of Kelly Engineering Group presented an expanded 24-chamber infiltration system — and for 33 Canterbury Lane, and received a commission-wide update that a superior court lawsuit naming all members as defendants in the Bridal Trail Road swimming pool case was dismissed with prejudice.
