Needham Council on Aging Criticizes New Veterans Tax Workoff Rules

Needham Council on Aging board flags flaws in new veterans tax break. Board members said the Select Board's draft rules for the town's new Veterans Tax Workoff Program wrongly require veterans to be over 60 and impose an income limit peer communities have dropped, undercutting the $1,500 annual stipend the program offers. Veterans Service Officer Dan O'Neill has been invited to the board's next meeting to discuss the issue.
Separately, the Finance Committee added funding for expanded part-time social worker hours not in the town manager's original budget and fully backed the Council on Aging's budget request. The senior center's fitness room, which charges $25 a month or $5 a class, lost roughly $7,500 in its worst month, October, prompting discussion of a fee increase that members concluded would not close the gap.
