NEEDHAM — The Needham Council on Aging delayed its renovated fitness center's reopening and heard a pointed dispute over shared pool and ping-pong space. Chair Sue told the board a tentative fitness-center opening of Monday, Oct. 26, would give staff time to address resident Stephen Cadigan's concerns about moving old gym equipment before new furniture arrives. Pool team member Gino Orsona told the board the renovated 1,100-square-foot game room, down from 1,448 square feet, cannot safely host both pool and ping-pong, asking "why is Needham doing this when the space can be made available, as other centers have done?" Staff reported counseling sessions nearly doubled to 39 in September, part-time clinician Jess Rice is departing, and the center currently orders 60 home-delivered meals a day through Needham Public Schools.
Sue said funding a kitchen-based meal program could require a recurring town subsidy over $100,000 annually, tied to Pollard School construction costs and a possible PILOT deal with BID Needham. The board approved its minutes and adjourned unanimously.
