NEEDHAM — The Needham Historical Commission voted to declare a house at 75 High Rock Street historically significant. The 6-0 vote came after the property's new owner detailed eleven rounds of alterations since the 1950s, arguing the "current building no longer clearly represents" its original 1850s form. Commission member Maria countered that the 1840s-era house carries family ties to the Townsend and McIntosh families and documents the town's early-18th-century expansion.
Member Jeff Keller said the commission's "mandate is whether the house is historic, and to me it is." The finding starts a 45-day clock toward a follow-up hearing, expected around October 15, to decide whether the house should be "preferably preserved," which staff member Miles said cannot fit the commission's regular October meeting due to Columbus Day and the town's October 19 special town meeting.
