Needham TSC Approves Edge Lines, Crosswalk Study, and Speed Signs for High Street

NEEDHAM -- June 10, 2026, Needham Transportation Safety Committee unanimously approved a package of safety improvements for High Street and funded a $35,700 intersection analysis at Honeywell Street and Wellesley Avenue at its June 10 meeting. Acting on a petition from a High Street resident who cited 85th-percentile vehicle speeds of 33 to 34 miles per hour, a two-way daily volume of 5,431 vehicles, and nearly 10 percent truck traffic eastbound, the committee voted to install edge-line striping along the full length of High Street, post statutory 30-mile-per-hour signs under a recent Massachusetts MUTCD amendment, and investigate a midblock crosswalk between Webster Street and Greendale Avenue. The committee separately voted to direct engineering staff to evaluate stop signs at the Douglas Road and Elmwood Road intersection following a petition from a resident who described a blind curve used as a cut-through route, noting zero recorded accidents at the site over 20 years. The $35,700 Honeywell-Wellesley feasibility study, awarded to consultant Boston O'Neill, has been in discussion for over a year; the town of Wellesley has declined to fund a traffic signal but left the door open to other interventions if a formal proposal is presented.
