Needham ZBA Approves First Variance Under Revised Law

Zoning Board · Meeting of September 17, 2026

Needham ZBA grants first variance under state's revised standard for a family of seven. The board unanimously approved a special permit and variance for homeowners Matthew Shifley and Channing Weymouth to add 672 square feet to their 29 Davenport Road home, the first Needham case decided under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40A, Section 10 as amended this past July. "We are cramped; we need more space," Weymouth told the board, describing a blended family of seven in a 1,260-square-foot house.

The same meeting saw the board unanimously approve a special permit letting Monsoon Indian Kitchen add up to nine dine-in seats at 324 Chestnut Street starting at 4:30 p.m., and revise enforcement language in the Needham Pool and Racket Club's special permit after member Peter Friedenberg objected to a proposed direct-appeal mechanism for abutters, calling it "a bad precedent."
