NEEDHAM — The Needham School Building Committee reviewed what happens to the Pollard Middle School project if voters reject funding this month, while the Permanent Public Building Committee approved roughly $1.46 million in construction payments. A presenter identified as Lisa said construction now runs $978 per square foot, up more than 60 percent from the town's last major school project, with MSBA reimbursement capped at $605 per square foot on only 84 percent of the space. She warned a failed vote would likely force the town to forfeit its state grant and reapply, saying "a failed vote means that the community wants a smaller educational program and those cuts would be painful." The Finance Committee separately approved the related warrant articles 5-4.
Early voting on the townwide ballot question opens October 17. The Permanent Public Building Committee also approved $835,086.72 to GNR Construction for the DPW fleet maintenance facility and smaller payments across the Center at the Heights, Broadmeadow RTU and Newman Theater projects.
