Needham assessors grant 11 abatements, settle Highland Ave ATB case
Other Committee · Meeting of February 12, 2026
Needham assessors grant 11 tax abatements, reject teardown tax fix. The board voted in executive session to grant abatements for properties including 76 Woodbine Circle, 6 Glendale Road and 235 Brookline Street, and settled an Appellate Tax Board case for 71 Highland Avenue. Resident Jerome Steinwagner told the board he was taxed on his old house's value for a year and a half after tearing it down to rebuild, asking, "can we go and figure out how to get this remedied?" The town's director of assessing said state law's June 30 lien date barred any retroactive fix, since a percent-complete inspection that June set his valuation back to January 1, 2025.
Fiscal 2026 abatement applications total 160, down from nearly 400 the prior year. The board's next meeting is February 26 at 10 a.m.
