Needham panel delays vote on $3 million playground request

Needham Community Preservation Committee stalls on $3 million Elliott School playground funding, eyes $4.2 million land deals. Superintendent of Parks and Forestry Edward Olsen and Park and Recreation Director Stacy Mulroy asked for $3 million in Community Preservation Act money toward a $3.47 million playground and field renovation, but members pushed for a revised estimate separating an ineligible $800,000 synthetic turf component before voting. "It seems like an awful lot to me, but, uh, I've never built a playground," said member Abby.
The committee also heard a $50,000 request for a disc golf course feasibility study and disclosed that purchase-and-sale agreements are imminent on two open-space properties totaling roughly $4.2 million, calling them "no-brainers." The only vote taken was unanimous approval of January's minutes; funding decisions are set for a March 18 vote following a March 11 public hearing.
