Other Committee · Meeting of June 1, 2026
Needham's Climate Action Committee unanimously approved sending four sustainability priorities to the Select Board ahead of its annual goal-setting process. The committee, meeting June 1, voted to direct its chair and staff member Gabby to finalize a letter recommending four actions: advancing the tree preservation bylaw now before the Select Board, pursuing a regional Solarize decarbonization campaign potentially coordinated through MAPC, launching a targeted outreach push to increase enrollment in the 100 percent green tier of the Needham Power Choice aggregation program, currently just 0.5 percent of the program's more than 8,000 enrolled households, and developing a policy requiring solar evaluation on all public construction and renovation projects, with Newman School's parking lot cited as a potential pilot under a power purchase agreement. The committee also heard that Eversource has approved a $259,037 post-construction incentive for the Jack Coggs wall building addition, and that a Stantec-funded study found Needham's parking minimums, including a 1.5-space-per-unit multi-family requirement against an ITE standard of 1.14, are more conservative than those of Lexington, Newton, Concord, and Wellesley.
