Needham design board approves bookstore facade, gas station and Onyx Partners signs

Needham Design Review Board unanimously clears facade and signage changes for three properties in a single meeting. The board reduced a proposed 125-square-foot Onyx Partners sign at 40 Franklin Street down to 100 square feet to match a Pure Hockey sign in the same building, after member Steve warned, "I always approach it's a slippery slope when I start making exceptions." It also approved a historic-building facade renovation for Chapters on Chestnut, a new bookstore in the Moseley Building at Chestnut Street and Great Plain Avenue, presented by owner Nicole Connolly with architect Monica Pauly. And it approved a rebranded canopy and LED pricing sign for the Shell station at 875 Highland Avenue, but rejected added accent lighting after the chair noted the site borders a residential area rather than "a Route 9 kind of situation." All 13 votes taken during the meeting passed unanimously among the four members present.
