Needham Finance Committee Approves $1.27 Million Snow and Ice Reserve Transfer

NEEDHAM — June 17, 2026 — Needham Finance Committee approves $1.27 million snow and ice reserve transfer and elects new leadership ahead of major school project vote. The committee unanimously approved the $1,269,395 reserve fund transfer at its June 17 meeting, covering most of the just over $2 million spent on winter weather removal in FY26, with a remaining $307,000 shortfall to be absorbed in the FY27 budget recapitulation. Finance staff noted it was "the first year in my tenure here that we have not been able to cover the snow and ice deficit with the reserve fund transfer." Members also pressed the project team on the $325 million middle school proposal, zeroing in on roughly $49 million in layered contingencies and questioning whether proposals from external OPM firm Leroy Hill and the design architect — totaling $5.2 million and $23.5 million respectively — reflect any duplication of internal town staff. The MSBA is expected to deliver its reimbursement rate determination in late July or August, ahead of an August 26 community meeting. Darren Kaufman was elected incoming chair and Carl O'Connor vice chair, both effective July 1.
