Needham Historical Commission Adds Citco Sign to Town Historic Inventory

Other Committee · Meeting of June 15, 2026

Needham Historical Commission votes to protect iconic Citco rooftop sign. The commission voted 5-0 at its June 15 meeting to add the Citco sign to the town's historic inventory, a step intended to prevent its removal during a renovation of the building by new owners Onyx. Under current zoning, rooftop signs lose grandfathered status upon building renovation; commission members said historic designation gives the Design Review Board, which has authority over the sign's fate, a pathway to allow it to remain.

The commission also approved a slate of officers for 2026-2027 effective September, with Megan elected Chair and Leah as Vice Chair, and opened a wider debate about whether the town should create a paid staff position at the Planning Department dedicated to historic preservation, with one member arguing "it should not be left to a volunteer commission."
