Needham panel backs neighborhood meetings for sidewalk pilot

Needham's Mobility Planning and Coordination Committee agreed to test neighborhood meetings, rather than a single town hall session, before piloting a program to remove underused sidewalks in exchange for faster repairs elsewhere. Chair Tim Bolger led the April 16 meeting, which opened nearly 20 minutes late while the panel waited on a quorum. Members debated whether a single scoring matrix or a "dual-track" budget split would fairly prioritize the roughly 40 to 50 miles of the town's 140-mile sidewalk network rated fair or poor.

One DPW staffer said federal accessibility guidance "has not yet reached the level of our obligation" that ADA compliance carries. Members also compared Needham's pace unfavorably to Weston, which one member said built 38 miles of sidewalk in nine seasons. The committee voted 5-0 to approve its March 9 minutes and to adjourn.
