Needham panel unanimously approves forwarding 178 South Street historic district report

NEEDHAM -- May 29, 2026, Needham's Local Historic District Study Committee unanimously approved forwarding a preliminary study report on 178 South Street to the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the Planning Board. The 5-0 roll call vote, taken May 29, starts a mandatory 60-day period before a public hearing can be held, with staff targeting submission of the finalized report, pending updated photographs, by early the following week and a public hearing tentatively set for August 6. The Wyeth Foundation, current owner of the property, communicated through chair Veronica Carlson that it wants to return 178 South Street to the market with protection in place and urged the committee to "be as expeditious as possible." The committee also discussed a possible next application for 706 Great Plain Avenue, identified as the 1720 James Smith House, and agreed to develop public-facing materials, including a flowchart, FAQ, and formal application process, to guide future property owners through the local historic district process, with a follow-up meeting set for June 24 at noon.
