Needham Park and Recreation Commission unanimously approved a memorandum of agreement and an Article 97 geothermal authorization for Warner Field, clearing two required local votes for the Pollard Middle School project. The 4-0 votes on both motions, taken at a special Friday morning meeting on July 24, came one day after the Conservation Commission provided its own unanimous approval. Katie King told the commission that the Massachusetts School Building Authority had asked the town to address whether the permanent underground installation of between 120 and 125 geothermal wells beneath Warner Field would trigger Article 97, and that the state's Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs indicated informally that it would.

Warner Field is expected to be taken offline in March 2028 and will not be playable until at least late April 2032 — a roughly four-year disruption to youth baseball and other recreation programs. The commission added language requiring at minimum quarterly project updates, after member Cindy Chasten pressed for regular milestones and raised safety concerns about contractors using the adjacent DeFazio Park facility. The town must next advance a home rule petition at a special town meeting requiring a two-thirds vote, followed by two-thirds approval from the Massachusetts legislature and the governor's signature.
