Needham Retirement Board Approves Warrants, Schedules Administrator Interviews for July
NEEDHAM — June 17, 2026 — Needham Retirement Board approves $1.37 million payroll warrant and flags state pension raid bill. The board voted unanimously at its June 17 meeting to approve a May payroll warrant of $1,370,476.02 and a June expense warrant of $142,064.51, with the fund's total value estimated at approximately $294 million. Board Member Bob Murrells, reporting from the PRIM conference, flagged a pending state bill — identified as either House Bill 5306 or 5389 — that would redirect PRIM earnings above a roughly 7 percent benchmark to fund state employee pension obligations, drawing opposition from local retirement officials at the conference. Murrells also noted that PRIM now holds 10 percent of its $123 billion portfolio in hedge funds and charged the Needham fund $63,000 in management fees in April. The board agreed to hold a special meeting the week of July 8 to interview finalists for the retirement administrator vacancy, separate from the regular July 15 meeting, at which auditors are expected to present findings from a recent PRIC audit covering 2019 to 2023 — including disputed benefit calculations the board declined to act on until auditors appear in person.
