Needham's New Historic District Commission Votes to Study 1786 South Street Property

NEEDHAM -- May 21, 2026, Needham's newly formed Historic District Commission voted unanimously at its inaugural meeting to study 178 South Street as a potential local historic district, targeting October Town Meeting for a formal vote. The commission, created under Section 2.12 of the town's General Bylaws following a 2024 Town Meeting vote, elected Allison Borelli as chair, citing her leadership of the predecessor study committee, with Lauren as vice chair and Brian as clerk, all by unanimous consent. The 1786 property, built by Joshua Lewis and later home to the family of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, has been on the market since the N.C. Wyeth Research Foundation, which had planned to establish a study center there, decided to sell after founder Linda Bean's death. Staff Liaison Miles Tucker described the timeline as "exceptionally aggressive," with a draft preliminary study report due for commission review by May 29, a Select Board presentation slated for July 21, and the Special Town Meeting warrant closing around September 8 for an October 19 meeting date.
