Needham School Panel Advances $325 Million Pollard Project, Approves Geothermal Testing Invoices

Other Committee · Meeting of July 13, 2026

Needham building committees advance $325 million Pollard Middle School project amid geothermal debate and outreach concerns. The Permanent Public Building Committee and Pollard Middle School Building Committee met jointly on July 13, with Chair Richard Cream presiding over both panels as a concurrent meeting-within-a-meeting. The School Building Committee received an expanded presentation on four energy system options for the proposed grades-six-through-eight school — ground-source geothermal, a hybrid system, air-source only, and natural gas — with the full geothermal option carrying an energy system cost of approximately $50.49 million within a $259 million construction estimate and showing a roughly $4 million net-present-value advantage over natural gas across a 25-year life-cycle analysis.

The MSBA is expected to announce its reimbursement figure, projected at $65 to $81 million, on August 26, ahead of a Special Town Meeting vote October 19. Committee members pressed project staff on community outreach format, with one member arguing that "it's such a limited group of people you're hearing from — 50 people across the entire town and it's the same 50 people" at panel-style forums, while staff reported 109 total meetings held to date. The PBC also approved more than $1.6 million in payments across the DPW Maintenance Facility, Center at the Heights, Newman Theater, and Emery Grover projects.
