Park Panel Interviews Seven for Commission Seat

Other Committee 2026-08-24 Part 3 · Meeting of August 24, 2026

Needham's Park and Recreation Commission vacancy subcommittee interviewed seven candidates for an open seat. Subcommittee members Josh Levy and Michelle led the sessions, hearing from applicants including attorney and Needham Baseball and Softball board member Jay Carter, youth-coach and financial-services professional Stephen DeRogatis, and a former longtime Needham assistant parks director identified as Karen. Carter said Needham's youth-sports fields "fall short" compared with neighboring towns and pushed for rail trail expansion.

In closing discussion, subcommittee members named Karen and DeRogatis as their top two picks, calling Karen's experience "a ton" and noting DeRogatis is "ingrained" in town committees. No appointment vote was taken; the subcommittee plans to finalize recommendations August 31 before a joint Park and Recreation Commission and Select Board meeting September 8 decides the appointment. One applicant, Ethan Calvert, was rescheduled to August 31 because of a conflict.
