PBBC reviews Fire Station 2 floor cracks

Other Committee · Meeting of August 24, 2026

Needham's Permanent Public Building Committee disclosed cracking in the Fire Station 2 apparatus bay floor that is letting water seep upward and rust steel beams below. Committee member Barry said a firefighter backing in a ladder truck first noticed water "squishing out" of the concrete, and that structural engineers from WSP, along with the original architect, will inspect the site Thursday. Barry said the floor is rated for 100,000 pounds against a roughly 75,000-pound truck and he does not believe the cracking threatens structural capacity.

The fire department wants written assurance the floor remains safe to use while repairs are planned. The committee also approved five routine project invoices totaling roughly $25,148, including $9,212 to architecture firm BH+A for the Center at the Heights renovation and $6,613.03 to Anise Electrical for a theater system change order at Needham High School.
