Needham assessors released $1 million in overlay surplus and backed a push to widen senior tax relief.
Other Committee · Meeting of August 21, 2026
Needham assessors released $1 million in overlay surplus and backed a push to widen senior tax relief. The Board of Assessors, chaired by John Bullion, voted 3-0 to release the funds, leaving the overlay at $4,087,000, just above the $4,029,000 minimum staff presenter Dave said is needed to cover pending tax appeals and abatements. The board also voted 3-0 to support an October Special Town Meeting warrant article raising income limits for the Clause 41C senior tax deferral program to $75,000 for single filers and $112,000 for married couples, up from $20,000 and $30,000.
Dave said the program deferred $110,000 this past year and could grow by another $30,000 to $50,000 under the new limits. Member Mike noted the board is "not like the moving party" on the article, since the Select Board will formally sponsor it.
