NEEDHAM — The Needham Climate Action Committee reviewed a Stantec study on overhauling off-street parking minimums but took no vote, deferring any letter of support to September. Presenter Gabby said Needham's current minimums exceed both national ITE benchmarks and most peer towns including Wellesley, Lexington, Concord and Newton, and that the town's payment-in-lieu parking fund, at roughly $5,000 per space, has been used only twice since its creation. Members debated how forcefully to weigh in, with one saying "I think the roadmap could get lost in a lot of this" and another cautioning against putting up or bucking up the process... for small gains The committee also lacked quorum to approve June 1 minutes after two members abstained.
Separately, member Erwin reported the Pollard school project faces a state Article 97 land-use review over geothermal wells planned for Warner Field, which could require Town Meeting and two-thirds Legislature approval, though an MSBA schematic-design vote is expected August 26 and an override vote is planned for November. The town also confirmed a $1 million state Climate Leaders grant for solar and heat pump work at the Jack Cogswell building.
