School Panel Votes To Start Pollard Permitting
Needham's building panel voted to start a state environmental review for Pollard Middle School's geothermal wells.
Other Committee · Meeting of August 10, 2026
Needham's building panel voted to start a state environmental review for Pollard Middle School's geothermal wells. The School Building Committee unanimously approved initiating the MEPA process for an Article 97 review, part of a $301 million project capped at a maximum $80.6 million, or 24.7 percent, state reimbursement. Public comment split sharply: resident Ken Buckley warned the financing creates "a 33 year debt cycle," while Denham Avenue resident Jessica Tolman said she was "delighted that our students will finally be able to learn in spaces that are the right size." A letter from resident Bobber McDonald cited a 288,572-square-foot figure conflicting with the project team's own 265,572-square-foot total.
The committee separately approved $8,743 in DPW Fleet Facility change orders, a $821,267.40 contractor payment, and a $27,912.14 change order for the Center at the Heights renovation. A public meeting on Pollard is set for August 26 at 6 p.m.
