Design board approves Needham Nutrition's blade sign

Other Committee · Meeting of September 28, 2026

Needham Design Review Board unanimously approves signage for a new nutrition shop and the local tennis club. The board voted 4-0 to approve a wall-mounted and projecting "blade" sign for Needham Nutrition at 915 Great Plain Avenue, conditioned on raising the blade sign to the bylaw's eight-foot minimum height. Member Steve said the sign's added descriptors "clarify what you do, not so much advertisement," while Chair Mark explained the board intentionally wrote its bylaw to encourage projecting signs because "we think they add to the streetscape." The board also voted 4-0 to approve two carved entrance signs for the Needham Tennis Club on Kingsbury Street, presented by club representative Kevin Sheehan after the signs' fabricator, Mike McCarthy of Yankee Woodcarvers, failed to connect to the Zoom call, with the board noting the submitted site drawing was "not accurate" but compliant based on written dimensions.
