Finance Committee backs fire study, tax relief warrant articles

Needham's Finance Committee learned the state School Building Authority cleared the $336 million Pollard Middle School project for schematic design, with cost estimates due back in June. Project team members Hank and Merrill said geothermal HVAC systems remain under study, citing a Westborough school that recouped $2.1 million of $6.2 million in HVAC costs through federal direct-pay rebates. The committee unanimously recommended a $55,000 warrant article for a fire department master plan and staffing study, and unanimously backed the $50,000 property tax assistance program, which aided 28 to 35 property owners last year.
The Community Preservation Committee reported $4.16 million in available revenue and previewed a $300,000 request toward an $800,000, 10-acre Ridge Hill land purchase, alongside pending Elliott School and CVETS roofing applications. "What would be cheaper if we built this out of metal or if we built it out of brick," Merrill said of ongoing cost control efforts.
