Needham Biosafety Committee Unanimously Renews Permits for Four Research Labs

Other Committee · Meeting of May 19, 2026

Needham Biosafety Committee approves annual permits for all four licensed research labs. The committee voted 4-0 Monday to renew biosafety operating permits for M-Lab Biosciences, Evolved by Nature, Perceptive, and Kandel, following spring inspections conducted by committee chair Julie, outgoing HHS designee Sai, and new epidemiologist Emily Connors. Inspectors flagged M-Lab for incomplete training documentation after the lab's chief scientific officer could not confirm the date of its most recent safety training, and pressed Evolved by Nature, which disclosed a recent needle-stick incident involving a senior scientist, to better document corrective actions, not just incident report filings.

Perceptive, the panel's most closely watched facility due to its radioactive materials work and volume of biological agents, drew praise for detailed internal biosafety minutes and strict engineering controls in two newly opened BSL-2 spaces. Kandel was commended for explicitly noting in its biosafety committee minutes that no biological incidents had occurred in the reporting year, a disclosure the panel had specifically requested in prior inspections.
