Needham committee approves final seal artwork, 7-0-1

Needham's Branding and Seal Committee voted 7-0 with one abstention Tuesday to approve final artwork for a redesigned town seal. The design, which removes a belt, kerchief and bag from an earlier draft of a feather-headdress figure, heads to the Select Board on March 10 before going to a Town Meeting warrant article. Member Kevin Keeney warned that removing cross-hatching from the small-scale version could make a figure "look like a ghost," prompting the committee to require a shading fix near the paddle.
Committee member Topher Cox made the motion to approve the artwork "as rendered," contingent on correcting the paddle shading and the direction of a boat's wake. Member Lewis Miller was absent; member Eddie Eaton abstained. Members also asked, unresolved, whether the design would appear on a future town flag.
