Other Committee · Meeting of September 15, 2026

Needham disability panel tables St. Joseph's $2.5 million access variance. The Needham Commission on Disabilities heard from architect Martin Dermody and Father Brian of St.

Joseph's Parish on five accessibility variances tied to a Lindsay Room renovation that would otherwise trigger $1.2 million in additional upgrades under state law. Mark Dempsey of the Metro West Center for Independent Living pushed back on treating stair-railing and door-hardware fixes as too costly, prompting the panel to continue the item to October 20 rather than vote. Co-chair Karen Morales said, "let's be a design thinker" about cheaper alternatives.

In unanimous 7-0 roll-call votes, the commission approved its June minutes and named member Michael Marciello its liaison to the Mobility Planning and Coordination Committee. Separately, the town found a Chestnut Street bookstore's $10,150 renovation fell below the threshold requiring accessibility upgrades.
