Needham Recreation Board Backs $2.9M Perry Rebuild
Other Committee · Meeting of September 14, 2026
Needham Park and Recreation Commission backs $2.9 million Perry Playground stormwater overhaul. The board voted to keep the redesign in its fiscal 2029 capital request at the higher cost after staff explained new town stormwater regulations pushed the estimate up from roughly $500,000, warning the aging playground would otherwise become unsafe. Commissioners also approved $626,000 for artificial turf at Memorial Field's infield over a $125,000 grass option, saying "we would have done grass if we thought grass was the best alternative," and backed a recurring $40,000 line for Needham Baseball and Softball field maintenance across five to six diamonds.
The board voted to convert the perennially flooded Lower Broad Meadow diamond to passive recreation space, citing more than 30 closures since last fall. A tennis instructor's request for department-authorized private lessons was tabled for a future agenda.
