Needham Technology Board Reviews $2 Million Software Overhaul

Needham's Technology Advisory Board reviewed a roughly $2 million overhaul of the town's financial software system Thursday. Technology department head Dave told the board a contract with Tyler Technologies should be signed "within the week," with full implementation taking 24 to 30 months. The town hired Josh Musicant as a dedicated project manager on a three-year contract to run the project.
Officials also outlined a new AI pilot for 20 town and 20 school staff members, comparing Microsoft Copilot's $30-per-user monthly cost against Gemini's roughly $15, and a records-request platform handling about 1,100 requests a year, roughly 900 from public safety. Board member Rich pushed for a formal AI governance policy and clearer, consolidated technology capital budget reporting. Chair Michael Mathias said the board's next meeting will move into executive session to review a 48-page cybersecurity assessment.
