Needham panel advances $800,000 Cartwright Road land purchase

Other Committee · Meeting of March 4, 2026

Needham weighs $800,000 open-space buy, balks at thin $1.4 million playground estimate. The Community Preservation Committee heard a pitch from Katie King, presenting for the Select Board and Conservation Commission, to acquire 10 acres off Cartwright Road for $800,000, split between $500,000 in Conservation Commission funds and $300,000 in CPC open-space reserves; a public hearing follows March 11. Chair Dave Harrow called the deal "a tremendous bargain for the town." Separately, members balked at a $1.4 million Eliot School playground and fields estimate delivered in undifferentiated lump sums, with Harrow saying the committee needs to get to "a no-brainer yes" before Town Meeting, and floated pushing the request to the fall cycle.

The panel also reviewed Needham Housing Authority funding requests topping $3.5 million and disclosed a newly signed, roughly $2.5 million Select Board deal for 32 acres of former Boy Scout land.
