Planning Board Approves BI Needham Oak Street Lot

Planning Board · Meeting of August 25, 2026

NEEDHAM — The Needham Planning Board unanimously approved a special permit for a new 39-space valet parking lot for Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham on Oak Street. The board, chaired by Justin McCullen with Vice Chair Adam Block, also granted a herbicide treatment special permit for an aquifer-area site at 636 Charles River Street after an unidentified resident accused officials of "invoking a process" to avoid disclosing which chemical would be used; Chair McCullen responded, "We're not engaging in conversation." Hospital President John Fogarty told the board emergency room volume has nearly doubled and employment has grown about 68 percent, as he previewed a Freeman Place expansion targeting a spring Town Meeting vote. The board also closed, without deciding, a continued hearing on the proposed Hickory Club indoor golf facility at 1 Garden Street, where a VHB traffic study found peak parking occupancy of just 33 percent.
